Roaming profiles with server 2008.  Why .V2 folders?
I have roaming profiles enabled in my domain and when I set them up i pointed the profile path to \\server\files\profiles\%USERNAME% In the profiles folder there are 2 folders for everyone: username and username.V2 What is the .V2 folder for? Also when i try to browse the folders from the server logged in as domain admin I get a popup say "You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to get access to this folder." I am wary of clicking get access as I don't know what it will do. When I check who is the owner of the file the box says "Unable to display currrent owner" Any thoughts on what's happening?

Hi, In Windows Vista, the profile namespace has been changed. The significant changes prevent Windows Vista from loading user profiles from previous versions of Windows. Also, previous versions of Windows do not load Windows Vista user profiles. Therefore, Windows Vista roaming user profiles will add "v2" (version 2) to the end of the profile folder. The "v2" is to used isolate Windows Vista roaming user profiles from roaming user profiles created by previous operating systems. Ive included the following website for more detailed information: Managing Roaming User Data Deployment Guide http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsVista/f/?en/library/fb3681b2-da39-4944-93ad-dd3b6e8ca4dc1033.mspx Hope it helps.

Hi, I've a problem managing user profile folder: scenario: the DC (that also sahres the profiles folders) is Windows 2008 R2 The client PC's are a mix of XP 32bit and Vista x64machines, I don't need tho synk the V1 and V2 profiles The XP machines load the profile into the folder \\server\users\username and this is OK , but the vista machines are saving/loading the profile (randomly seems to me...) the profile into \\server\users\username.v2 (ad this shold be OK) or \\server\users\username\.v2 so the vista profile will become a subfolder of the XP profile (in this way the xp machies are loading into the profile also the v2 foleder that is useless for XP)....I'd like to avoid the second behaviour (the user\.v2 subfolder) any idea? thanks in advance best regards ettore

Ettore, Did you ever find a solution to your random saving of the profiles to either \username.v2\ or \username.v2?? We are seeing the same thing in a mixed XP/Win7 environment. Thanks Mark

If the user has a backslash at the end of their profile path, I.e. \\server\Users\%username%\profile\ Then they get profile\.v2 If the user does not have a backslash at the end of their profile path, i.e. \\server\Users\%username%\profile Then they get profile.v2

You can append the .V2 designation to the profile path - \\server\profileshare\%username%.V2
